Ochanomizu University is located at the city centre of Tokyo and has been a partner university of the University of Wuppertal since 2001. It is one of two women’s national universities in Japan. Literally translated, its name means “tea water” (Ocha = tea, Mizu = water). Students and lecturers therefore fondly call it “ochadai” (“Tea University”).
The partnership between the Ochanomizu University and the University of Wuppertal reaches back to the visiting professorship of Prof Per Jensen, PhD (theoretical chemistry). In 2000, he was coordinator of the University’s Japanese relations and, on the initiative of the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, visiting professor at the Ibaraki University in Mito, which is located approximately 150 km northeast of central Tokyo.
On Prof Jensen’s initiative, 84 Japanese exchange students from the women’s university have studied mathematics, chemistry, physics, or computer simulation in science at the University of Wuppertal since 2008.
In turn, students of the University of Wuppertal have participated in Ochdai’s annual two-week “Ochanomizu University Summer Program” since 2011. The topics of summer schools relate to Japanese culture and society, and change every year. In the past between two and four students of the University of Wuppertal participated in the programme each year. Fortunately, in 2017, the number rose to 11 participants.
