Scientific career paths – how to analyse and overcome gender-specific differences on the scientific labour market

The project stages

  • The project started in August 1999. The first part of the study focused on gender-specific selection, supervision and support mechanisms. 37 university lecturers (10 women, 27 men) from five different departments, who supervised doctoral dissertations, participated in guided interviews. 1
  • The situation of 168 doctoral students (25.6 % female, 74.4 % male) were examined as part of a thesis submitted for a diploma in the same year.2
  • In 2001, the results of both studies were used as follow up on questions, which had remained unclarified and new questions, which had emerged until then. 12 doctoral candidates (6 women and 6 men) from eight different departments participated in the guided interviews and answered questions on the conditions for doctoral researchers and gender-specific differences.3
  • In 2002/2003, with the help of statistical questionnaires, a survey of all habilitation candidates at the departments was conducted at the University of Wuppertal. Only candidates recorded at the departments were surveyed. 37 (10 women, 27 men) of these candidates were questioned in a guided interview about their professional qualification and gender-specific differences. Furthermore, they were asked for their opinion about the amendments to the General Act on Higher Education undertaken by the Federal Government.4
